Gnotobiotic Animal Research Facility

The Animal Resource Program has established a research facility for the housing of gnotobiotic (also referred to as "germ-free") mice. Gnotobiotic mice are either completely free of exogenous bacterial, fungal, and viral microorganisms or host a defined bacterial population. They can be bred and maintained indefinitely in soft-sided bubble-type isolators.  All supplies introduced into the isolators must be sterile to prevent contamination of the animals and environment inside. Food, water and other supplies are imported into the isolators by docking autoclaved supply cylinders to a double-door port built into the isolator wall. The gnotobiotic mouse colony is monitored weekly for the presence of bacterial, viral, and fungal organisms. Please contact the ARP office with questions about how to use this facility.
