Animal FacilitiesAll of the facilities and care and use programs for laboratory animals used in biomedical research and housed at the University Park campus are coordinated by the Animal Research Program (ARP). The available animal facilities include space for most of the common laboratory animal species. It is the intent, within limitations, not to deny anyone with an IACUC-approved animal use protocol the capability of using any animal species required for their research or teaching programs. Each ARP facility has an animal technician(s) assigned to it. The technician's duties include daily health and environmental surveillance, routine watering and feeding of the animals, and cleaning of the equipment and animal rooms. These individuals report to the ARP Coordinator who is responsible for the assessment and correction of any concerns or problems associated with animal care and husbandry within the facilities. Animals may not be held overnight in areas other than IACUC approved laboratory animal facilities. Transportation of animals to another institution or facility must be directed through the ARP. Animal holding rooms may not be used to store equipment or supplies. The Coordinator may grant exceptions to this rule in special circumstances, such as the use of biohazardous materials.
