Animal Purchasing & ShippingAll animals to be housed in Animal Resource Program (ARP) facilities must be ordered through the ARP office. Investigators should complete and return an Animal Care Request (ACR) Form (rtf or pdf format) to the ARP office. The ARP office must receive this form at least two weeks prior to the proposed initiation of the project. Subsequent orders for animals under the same ACR may be placed by telephone by noon on Wednesday of the week before their arrival at the facility. Remember to allow sufficient time for animals to acclimate to their new surroundings after arrival at PSU before starting any experimental work. Animal care request forms must include an approved IACUC number. When filling out an ACR form, please be as complete as possible. If you have a question about available animal species or strains, please contact the ARP office. Our veterinary staff is happy to assist investigators in gathering information about animal models and sources. Every effort is made to accommodate the investigator's request relative to sources of animals. If no specific source is indicated, selection will be made on the basis of animal quality, vendor reliability and ease of shipping. The majority of mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits received at the ARP come from approved commercial suppliers of these species. If it is necessary for an investigator to receive animals from a non-approved source, special arrangements should be made through the ARP veterinary staff. Shipments from non-approved vendors will require additional time for shipping preparations and quarantine upon arrival. There is no handling charge by ARP to the investigators for the ordering service. The bill to the investigator will include purchase price, (long distance) telephone calls, transportation and shipping box charges. ARP will attempt to notify investigators on the day of arrival of a requested shipment of animals.
