CHP is the simultaneous production of electrical power and useful thermal energy from a single fuel source. Pennsylvania has an abundance of natural gas, the primary fuel for CHP. Given a facility with appropriate thermal and electric load profiles, a CHP system utilizing natural gas can substantially reduce a site’s total energy expenditures and simultaneously reduce its total carbon footprint. Hospitals, due to their need for both electricity and heat 24/7, make excellent candidates for CHP.
