Penn State Institute for Computational Science Name Change

With approval of the Senior Vice President for Research, Eva J. Pell, and support from the Institute for Computational Science (ICS) Steering Committee members and affiliated Deans and administrators, the Penn State ICS has been changed to the Penn State Institute for CyberScience, effective July 1, 2008. Padma Raghavan has served as Director of the Institute since its inception a year ago, and will continue as Director. CyberScience is a much better fit for the mission and vision of the ICS, which encompasses computing and data, model discovery and model simulation, and both discrete (network) and continuum methods to enable discovery through computing across a variety of disciplines. Computational science is more restrictive and tends to be associated with the simulation of continuum models using numerical methods. This name change is forward looking and maps well to funding programs at major agencies including, for example, the NSF Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation Program, and programs on Cyber-X, such as, Cyber-Chemistry, Cyber-Physical Systems, etc.

The ICS was launched as a collaborative effort among the academic colleges, the Applied Research Laboratory, the Office of Information Technology Services, and the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research. The ICS was developed to enhance Penn State's national and international presence and stature in computational science, to develop proposals that will win new opportunities for Penn State faculty and students to pursue high level collaborative interdisciplinary research; to drive the use and understanding of computational science in graduate education, and to increase access and awareness of high-end computing facilities.

Institute for CyberScience to Expand Computing Power for Research

The computer that once filled a room is now on your desktop, the memory is on your key chain, but there are still projects that require computing and storage capacity far beyond a roomful of desktops. The Penn State Institute for CyberScience (ICS@PSU) aims to meet aims to advance discovery through computing and information science. (read more...)
