Mission:

The mission of the Intellectual Property Office at Penn State is to protect, transfer, and enforce Penn State intellectual property. The IPO encourages commercial interest in Penn State inventions and seeks to generate revenue from Penn State intellectual property.

In calendar year 2001, Penn State faculty and students disclosed 203 inventions. The Intellectual Property Office filed 136 provisional patent applications and 84 U.S. regular patent applications; 65 U. S. patents were issued. Royalty revenues for calendar year 2001 exceeded $2 million.

The Intellectual Property Office is part of the Research and Technology Transfer Organization of the Vice President for Research at Penn State. It coordinates its activities with the other RTTO offices, specifically with the Industrial Research Office, PENNTAP, the Ben Franklin Technology Center, and the Research Commercialization Office, as well as with Penn State's Office of Sponsored Programs.
