The contamination of water with perchlorate is
potentially a national concern with few known methods of economically treating
contaminated water. Currently, there is no proven process available to treat
low concentrations of perchlorate in drinking water. Typical water treatment
technologies such as ion exchange, air stripping, carbon absorption and
advanced oxidation have little effect on perchlorate.
This technology will treat perchlorate-contaminated water using an aerobic biofilm reactor under highly reduced conditions. A packed bed reactor is used to grow perchlorate-respiring bacteria and to reduce perchlorate to the ppb range or lower.
