Setup-Machining Cycle

The work-piece setup-machining cycle consists of the following steps. All set up operations can be done on-line or off-line of the machine tool.

Step 1: Work-Piece Mounting (Offline Example)

  • Wipe down the four grippers with alcohol
  • Apply the adhesive
  • Mount the work-piece
  • Flip the fixture and insert the light guides
  • Cure the adhesive by exposing to UV light for 40 seconds


Step 2: Work-Piece Machining

  • Spot face the three pads: Ø 1.25”
  • Spot drill the three pads
  • Drill holes:
    • Short arm: Ø 0.386”
    • Center pad: Ø 0.5469”
    • Long arm: Ø 0.323”
    • Small top and bottom: Ø 0.177”
  • Ream the center and small holes:
    • Center: Ø 0.5625”
    • Small holes: Ø 0.186” ↓ 0.44”


Step 3: Work-Piece Dismounting

  • Use the ejector to de-bond the work-piece


Step 4: Gripper Cleaning

  • Use an alcohol soaked towel to wipe off residual uncured adhesive
  • Use an end mill to trim the bulk, cured adhesive
  • Use an adhesive grinder to strip the remaining cured adhesive
  • Other techniques include hot water power spray or hot air gun and razor scraper


Step 5: Work-Piece Cleaning

  • Use an alcohol soaked rag to remove the residual uncured adhesive
  • Immerse the work-piece in a hot water bath to hydrolyze and de-bond the residual cured adhesive
  • Other techniques include hot water power spray or chemical adhesive remover
