- Associate Director for Strategic Research Development
Dr. Rigas works with faculty and research offices across Penn State to identify strategic research priorities, facilitate research program development and coordinate faculty teams as they develop university-wide, multi-institution, interdisciplinary research proposals. He is also working across the University in an effort to expand infrastructure to support the development of training grants.
Dr. Rigas has over 15 years of experience in scientific research and research portfolio administration, including the management of complex and multidisciplinary programs. He began his career as a staff research scientist at the U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development leading research projects on environmental exposure data collection, biomedical sensing, and diagnostics. He has broad teaching and research interests that span data science and health. For over 10 years he held positions in grant program management and organizational administration at both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF). Dr. Rigas came to SIRO in 2016 from the University of Pennsylvania where he had been the Director of Strategic Initiatives within the Office of the Vice Provost for Research. He has a PhD in bioengineering from Penn State and a BSE in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and served as an adjunct professor of bioengineering at George Mason University. When not at SIRO, you will find Marc outdoors either running or on a bike, enjoying good food (both cooking and eating) and singing, sometimes with and in front of others.
