Description of the Award: 

Pathway will consider applications directed toward topics relevant to the prevention, treatment and cure of all diabetes types (type 1, type 2 and gestational), diabetes -related disease states (obesity, pre-diabetes, and other insulin resistant states) and diabetes complications. The program intends to attract individuals with a broad range of expertise in various science and technology disciplines, including medicine, biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics to the field of diabetes research.

Each institution is allowed a maximum of one nomination. The nomination can be in one of the three available Pathway award types:

  • Initiator (for researchers in postdoctoral training)

Institutions must have a unique DUNS and/or IPF number to be considered independent.

Nominees must have the appropriate full-time position to be eligible for the award at the sponsoring institution (postdoctoral fellow for Initiator, independent faculty appointment for Accelerator and Visionary).

Nominees are required to devote at least 75% of their total time and effort to research during the funding period.

Required for the internal Downselect:

  1. Biosketch (4 pages max) - for the applicant and where relevant, the Mentor
  2. Abstract - 1 Page
  3. Essay Questions – (1 page total)

    • Initiator and Accelerator Awards:

      1. What makes your research strategy particularly innovative and important for people with diabetes? What makes it uniquely suited for this program rather than a traditional research grant program?
      2. Describe your most significant research accomplishments to date and the personal qualities/characteristics that were required for these accomplishments. For example, provide evidence of innovation and creativity, the ability to challenge paradigms, identify opportunities and take intellectual risks, establish collaborations, integrate diverse sources of information, or develop novel alternative approaches when new challenges or opportunities arose.
      3. What are your future career plans and how will this award will further those objectives? What is your long-term commitment to diabetes research?
  • Visionary Award:

    1. What makes your research strategy particularly innovative and important for people with diabetes? What makes it uniquely suited for this program rather than a traditional research grant program?
    2. Describe your most significant research accomplishments to date and the personal qualities/characteristics that were required for these accomplishments.
