Researchers working with controlled substances (drugs, substances, and certain chemicals overseen by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration) have additional obligations to maintain the integrity of their research and ensure they are in compliance with all federal regulations.

In the near future, the University will be sending a request to the research community asking for information on controlled substances once used for research which are not covered by a current DEA registration. Sometimes called “orphaned substances,” these are often left behind when a research group vacates a lab space, or are occasionally the result of a lapsed registration. The University will catalog responses and use the information to determine how best to facilitate disposal of the substances. Please look for a communication on this issue in the coming months.
