Revisions to Penn State policy AC80: Outside Business Activities and Private Consulting (formerly HR80) went into effect September 2018.

Faculty continue to be allowed to conduct outside business activities during the faculty appointment period for up to an equivalent of 40 hours per month. Faculty members are required to obtain prior approval before engaging in certain outside business activities, such as starting a company, exceeding monthly time limits, involving students or staff in outside business activities, teaching for another university during the appointment period, or assuming an executive or management position for a third party.

The Office for Research Protections (ORP) now monitors compliance with the policy and provides support to faculty. The ORP collects information about faculty members' participation in outside business activities on a yearly basis. For the 2018-2019 year, the ORP will continue to collect this information through department staff. In the future, faculty members will be able to submit these reports through an online system.
