Office for Research Protections     |     Institutional Animal and Care Use Committee (IACUC)

The IACUC reminds the research community that before an investigator leaves the University all his or her open IACUC protocols must be closed or a new PI must be added and approved, and arrangements must be made for the transfer or disposition of animals left on protocols.

At a minimum, 60 days prior to departure:

  • Contact the IACUC (orp-iacuc@psu.edu, 814-865-1775) to inform staff of the departure and date of termination.
  • Begin planning for the disposition of the animals. If transferring animals, contact the Animal Resource Program (814-865-1495) to initiate the process.

45 days prior to departure:

  • Submit modifications to any IACUC protocols or close out protocols if work is done.

Before the investigator's termination date:

  • Confirm that any pending protocol modifications have been approved. If not, contact the IACUC to discuss.
  • Verify animal disposition has been completed.
  • If applicable, close out any remaining protocols.

If any animals remain on a protocol after a PI’s departure, the animals will be transferred to a holding protocol for a maximum of 7 days. If no prior arrangements were made for the disposition of the animals, they will be euthanized at the discretion of the Attending Veterinarian or direction of the IACUC. All costs associated with animal care during this time frame will be the responsibility of the department/division of the departing PI.

Contact the IACUC (orp-iacuc@psu.edu, 814-865-1775) at any time with questions or concerns.
