The American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) Foundation offers competitive research scholarships to both doctoral-level students and master’s-level students who utilize scientific diving as a principal research tool or study scientific diving. For the 2020 awards, Kira Turnham, a doctoral student in Biology won first place for her proposal entitled "Examining thermal tolerance in Palauan coral reefs." For her Ph. D. dissertation, she is studying coral symbioses in Dr. Todd LaJeunesse’s laboratory. Kira has also trained under. Dr. Tim White for scientific diving. Kira's work will be used to improve ecological modeling of coral symbiosis partnerships in response to climate change. This year's scholarship competition was intense. Kira has further elevated the scientific dive program among AAUS organizational members. Congratulations to Kira!
