SUBMISSION DEADLINES AND REVIEW TIMELINE

The deadline for submission of IACUC new applications, renewal applications, and modification requests is every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Submissions are reviewed by the committee during a conference call which is conducted two Mondays after the Wednesday deadline. The determination of whether an application must be reviewed during a full committee meeting is made during the conference call, and if the application is deemed as such, it will be reviewed at the next full meeting. The IACUC will consider requests for a shorter review timeline to address unforeseen events or special research opportunities with a written request from the Principal Investigator. However, due to the volume of submissions that the committee reviews on a weekly basis, requests for a shorter review timeline should only be made in exceptional circumstances and can only be granted by the committee on a very limited basis. Additional information about IACUC meeting dates, submission deadlines, and the review timeline (including holiday considerations) is available on our web site here.

IACUC Protocol Requirements

  • Requirement AIACUC Online Training – some applications require this training for listed personnel (see below)
  • Requirement B - Occupational Health Training – some applications require this training for listed personnel (see below)
  • Appendix C - USDA Pain Categories (RTF) – Appendix C is provided as a reference.
  • Animal/Biohazard Safety Protocol (RTFDOC recommended for Mac users) - This form is required for protocols involving infecting animals with any viable organism or involving animals, caging, or bedding material contaminated with hazardous materials that will pose a risk to personnel caring for or working with the animals.  Principal Investigators must contact Dr. Jeffery Dodds, D.V.M. (814-865-1495 / jwd12@psu.edu) prior to completing this form.  This document must be prepared in consultation with Dr. Dodds.  It must also be approved by Dr. Dodds before it can be submitted to the IACUC for review.
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) – Some protocols involve animal procedures for which the IACUC has developed a Standard Operating Procedure. PIs using these procedures may indicate that they will follow the specific SOP(s) rather than detailing the procedure in the application.  These IACUC Standard Operating Procedures are online for Agricultural Animals and Laboratory Animals.
