IACUC Guideline V
Rodent Breeding Colony
Purpose:
The purpose of this policy is to describe (1) the conditions under which a separate IACUC Breeding Colony Application is necessary; and (2) the information the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) will use to monitor the activity carried out under the protocol.
Policy:
- A breeding colony of rodents maintained to supply animals to multiple IACUC approved projects shall have an independent IACUC approval and a separate IACUC number.
- The IACUC will authorize animal use based on the estimated number of offspring to be produced from the colony.
- The IACUC will require reporting of the following information at the time of the annual review of the protocol. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator to maintain accurate records.
- a. The number of offspring assigned to another IACUC approved protocol and the IACUC protocol number to which they were assigned.
- b. The number of offspring that died or were euthanized without assignment.
- The Office for Research Protections (ORP) will send an IACUC Annual Project Review form to the principal investigator approximately two months prior to the anniversary date of the last IACUC approval or review.
