Working with Wild Rodents at PSU

Wild rodents can harbor infectious microbes that may infect research rodents. In order to protect to health of PSU research rodent colonies, please adhere to the procedures outlined below.

  • Do not bring wild rodents (live or dead) into PSU rodent housing facilities.
  • Do not enter PSU rodent housing facilities after working with wild rodents. Your clothing may harbor infectious agents from the wild rodents.
  • Don't wear a lab coat in the animal facilities if it has been used while handling wild rodents. The lab coat could be contaminated.
  • Transporting dead animals:
    • Dead animals should be transported in sealed plastic bags or a leak proof container.
  • Disposal:
    • Place animals in a plastic bag and store frozen in a laboratory freezer.
    • Contact the Animal Resource Program Office at 865-1495 to arrange for pick up and disposal of the carcasses.
