IACUC Policy VII
Fish Embryo Use at PSU

The purpose of this policy is to define when developing fish embryos must be considered vertebrate animals that require a protocol submission to the IACUC for review and approval.

Procedure:

If fish embryos are used for experimental purposes, the use of those embryos does not require a protocol submission to the IACUC for review and approval.

Once a developing fish embryo absorbs the yolk sac and can forage on its own, for example, a five day time period for zebra fish, it is considered a vertebrate animal as a matter of policy definition.

Penn State Policy RA15, Care and Use of Vertebrate Animals must be applied anytime vertebrate animals are used in research activities.
