EducationORP Educational ActivitiesORP's education initiative focuses primarily on fostering the responsible conduct of research at Penn State. ORP tries to educate the Penn State community on topics of responsible conduct of research through a number of different methods including: ORP Newsletter: The newsletter, published four times annually, addresses topics such as announcements from ORP, discussion of current and new Federal regulations, explanation of Penn State policies and guidelines, tips for working with ORP, and issues relevant to the responsible conduct of research. Research & Professional Ethics Workshops: ORP annually delivers a responsible conduct of research workshop to faculty in each University Park College and select Penn State campus locations. Workshop topics are targeted to cover relevant issues for each College. Online Training: Currently, ORP makes five online training programs available to the Penn State research community - Research with Human Participants (IRB Training), Research with Animals (IACUC Training), Stem Cell Training, Occupational Health Training and HIPAA for Researchers. IRB Workshops: Each year, the IRB offers workshops to orient new researchers. The workshops cover basic research ethics (the "why") and a crash course in choosing and filling out applications. (the "how"). Survival Skills and Ethics Series: Open to graduate students and post-docs, the Survival Skills and Ethics Series covers a variety of topics, including presentation slide design, working with an adviser, tips for the job hunt and ethical case studies - just to name a few. Guest speakers from across the university bring unique perspectives to the workshops. Brown Bag Discussion Series: The Brown Bag sessions are designed for faculty and student researchers who are interested in learning more about specific research-related topics as well as best practices for conducting "responsible" research. The sessions are intended to provide participants with new and useful information and to allow time to ask questions and engage in lively discussion. Invited Presentations: ORP staff members are available to present a variety of responsible conduct of research topics to student, faculty, and staff audiences. The IRB and IACUC Coordinators frequently visit classrooms to discuss human participant research and answer questions about the research review and approval process. The Education Specialist delivers presentations to graduate student seminars and faculty meetings on topics of research ethics.
