Research Study Details

Build Bone Together: The Musculoskeletal Effects of Group Exercise

Exercise intervention to evaluate the effect of strength training group fitness classes on bone density and fitness.

Screening Procedures:

1.  If interested, participants will attend 1 of 3 informational sessions.

2.  Ask participant health survey questions to determine preliminary eligibility.

Experimental Procedures:

1.  Recruitment and consent of 60 healthy, participants.  The participants will meet with the primary investigator at FITOLOGY for an orientation meeting where we will explain the study details, tour the exercise facility, and sign consent forms.

2a.  Physical Evaluation Screening and Baseline Testing

Each participant will receive a physical examination from the CRC staff and a risk stratification will be completed to determine eligibility.

Measurement procedures to be followed before (week 3), during (week 16), and after (week 28) the group exercise intervention:

2b.  Baseline Testing

The participant will complete the following health and fitness (physiological) measures:

physical evaluation

submaximal fitness evaluation

Cardiovascular fitness will be evaluated with cycling test on a stationary bike beginning at a moderate speed and increasing the speed until heart rate reaches a submaximal heart rate based upon participant's age.  We will only measure your heart rate during the test.

Body composition (musculoskeletal) measures:
whole body iDXA scan or whole body DXA scan if iDXA not available
Bone density, fat mass, and muscles mass will be measured with a low dose x-ray machine. The participant will lie down on a table for the scan and a small machine arm or the table will move in order to scan the entire body.  If a scan is unsuccessful due to equipment error or user error, it may need to be repeated, with the verbal permission of the participant.

3.  Random division into 1 of 2 experimental groups:  Strength and Flexibility

4.  Preliminary Exercise Protocol - Gradual increase in exercise time.

NOTE:  The participants may choose their own schedule of classes as long as the following criteria is met – FITOLOGY has over 40 classes per week.

Flexibility Group

Week 1    30 minutes (2 x 15 minutes) cycling and 20 minutes (1 x 20 minutes) flexibility class

Week 2    60 minutes (2 x 30 minutes) cycling and 40 minutes (2 x 20 minutes) flexibility class

Week 3    90 minutes (2 x 45 minutes) cycling and 60 minutes (1 x 20 minutes and 1 x 40 minutes) flexibility class

Muscular Strength Group

Week 1    30 minutes (2 x 15 minutes) cycling and 20 minutes (1 x 20 minutes) strength class

Week 2    60 minutes (2 x 30 minutes) cycling and 40 minutes (2 x 20 minutes) strength class

Week 3    90 minutes (2 x 45 minutes) cycling and 60 minutes (1 x 20 minutes and 1 x 40 minutes) strength class

5.  First Exercise Block Protocol (Week 4 - Week 15)- 3 cycling classes and 2 strength or flexibility classes for the 12-week period

6.  Mid-Protocol Testing (WEEK 16)    Physiological and Musculoskeletal Measures

7.  Second Exercise Block Protocol (Week 16 - Week 27) – 3 cycling classes and 3 strength or flexibility classes for the 12-week period

8.  Final Protocol Testing (WEEK 28)    Physiological and Musculoskeletal Measures

Each participant will scan their membership card for verification of entering FITOLOGY.  In order to monitor attendance.
