BOLD (Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet) Effects on Metabolic Syndrome (BOLD-X Study)
This study examines the effects of lean red meat as part of a healthy weight-loss diet combined with exercise on cardiovascular risk factors.
Subjects will complete 13 weeks of controlled feeding (all food and drinks provided): all subjects will consume an Average American Diet for 2 weeks, before being randomized to one of 3 heart healthy intervention diets. They will consume the intervention diet for 5 weeks while maintaining their body weight, and then will consume the same diet with calorie restriction for 6 weeks to induce weight loss. Physiological and biochemical assessments will be performed at the end of each phase. During the weight loss phase, subjects also will receive physical activity and dietary counseling specific to their allocated intervention diet; they will be asked to follow these principles during a 12 week free living period.
