The Office for Research Protections announces a new policy, RP13: Use of Controlled Substances in Research. This policy requires that researchers follow applicable laws when using controlled substances in their research, and primarily highlights Federal laws and regulations without creating any additional restrictions. Individual researchers are responsible for obtaining their own Registrations from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. A key aim is to ensure that researchers understand that a valid, active registration is required in order to dispose of controlled substances. Additionally, specific requirements are outlined for reporting loss or theft, as well as the ability to designate laboratory staff as Authorized Agents or Authorized Laboratory Personnel.

The ORP tracks registrations and provides courtesy expiration reminders, and works together with Environmental Health & Safety on questions related to disposal of substances. More information can be found on the ORP website: https://www.research.psu.edu/controlsubs
