Title: Discussing US socio-political issues as a postdoc
The presenters are Sofia Johnson-Gutiérrez, Esther Munoz, SACNAS Officers and Ph.D. students in the Department of Geosciences, and Dr.Joshua Garber, postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Geosciences
Description: The intent of this forum is to converse about race and racism in the US, the potential challenges of confronting US social issues in unfamiliar places (either as a foreign citizen or from different parts of the US), and the unique role that postdocs have in recognizing and addressing educational and social inequities. We will address topics such as:
- How social and political issues in the US compare to other parts of the world
- Staying connected to family, friends, and individual cultures
- Managing feelings of isolation and/or separation from home
-
Learning about local cultural norms while experiencing homesickness
Participants will actively engage with the topic and have an open dialogue based on their experiences. All postdocs are encouraged to attend!
