Launching the internal competition now enables OSVPR to conduct an internal selection as well as provide the selected candidates adequate time to prepare the application. The Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship is a Two-year fellowship that recognizes innovative, promising early-career professors in the Americas who are exploring breakthrough, high-impact research in computer science or a related field. Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Fellows should support this mission by fostering diverse and inclusive cultures within their communities.

Eligibility criteria

  • Full-time faculty at a degree-granting college or university in North America or South America.
  • Faculty must have received their terminal degree (e.g., PhD, DSc) in May 2017 or later. We will take into account approved delays, like leaves of absences from the workplace and postdocs, on a case by case basis if you contact us at msfellow@microsoft.com.
  • Currently conducting research, advising graduate students, and teaching in a classroom.
  • Proposed research must be closely related to the general research areas carried out by researchers at Microsoft as noted in the Our research tab At the of the Faculty Fellowship website.

A maximum of three nominations per campus will be accepted; if more than one is nominated, then the other one or two nominees should help us increase the opportunities for faculty who are underrepresented in the field of computing. This includes those who self-identify as a woman, African American, Black, Hispanic, Latinx, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and/or person with a disability.

Awards Details:

Provisions of the 2021 award included $100,000 USD awarded annually for two years starting in the fall of 2021.

Interested applicants should please upload the following documents in sequence in one PDF file no later than 4:00 p.m. on the internal competition deadline:

1. Cover Letter (1 page, pdf):

  • PI name, departmental affiliations(s) and contact information
  • Name, title and departmental affiliations of three individuals that will write letters of recommendation
  • Title of this funding opportunity

2. Statement of Research (no more than two pages, pdf) to include: your major research initiatives, what makes your approaches especially innovative, and how you would use the funding and the impact it would have on your research; a paragraph describing how you support the mission of fostering diversity and inclusive cultures within your student and researcher communities and how you plan to in the future; we suggest a font no smaller than 10-point and references should be included as part of the two pages
