IACUC Webinar: USDA Proper Literature Searches

The Penn State IACUC at University Park will be hosting a live Zoom webinar at 11am on 4/12/2023, featuring guest speakers from the USDA’s Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC). This training will focus on IACUC and regulatory expectations for performing proper literature searches for alternatives to procedures that cause more than momentary pain or distress with animals. A search is required for all IACUC protocol submissions that involve procedures or animal models that may cause more than momentary pain or distress. Participants will:

  • Receive a brief Intro to the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, refinement of animal use).
  • Learn proper search strategies, including appropriate keywords to use, relevant timeframes of literature searches, and databases to be searched.
  • Learn proper literature search syntax (Boolean operators, parentheses, quotation marks, etc.)
  • Gain additional knowledge via the live Q&A.

  • Jessie Carder - the USDA National Agricultural Library's (NAL), Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) Coordinator
  • Erika Edwards - Technical Information Specialist at the National Agricultural Library’s (NAL) Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC)
