The Office for Research Protections (ORP) reminds the research community that all research involving controlled substances must be registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and reported to the ORP.  This applies to research involving animal or human subjects as well as in vitro or analytical research. While investigators are responsible for obtaining and maintaining registration directly through the DEA, the ORP offers assistance for controlled substances of any Schedule, including

  • Advising investigators on the requirements for the registration and use of controlled substances
  • Helping investigators maintain compliance with federal, state, and University requirements
  • Monitoring and tracking investigators' Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registrations
  • Notifying investigators about registration expirations
  • With Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), helping faculty and staff dispose of controlled substances

The ORP also maintains a number of useful templates and forms to assist investigators in their compliance with DEA requirements such as inventories and usage and disposal logs.

More information about controlled substances in research and management of DEA registrations, including forms, templates, and resources, can be found at the Controlled Substances in Research website.
