Checklist for Departing Researchers - IACUC, IBC, UIC
Animal Subjects and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Protocols
Any open and active IACUC protocols must be closed or transferred to another PI prior to departure. Disposition of any animals under the researcher’s care must occur in coordination with the Animal Resource Program (ARP) and in accordance with the approved methods outlined in the IACUC protocol. Instructions for departing PIs involved in animal research can be found here.
Some circumstances may allow for the transfer of a protocol to another PI. Contact ORP to discuss a protocol transfer and, if appropriate, initiate the transfer process.
In exceptional circumstances (e.g., a PI cannot transport their animals to a new institution until an IACUC protocol is in place there), animals may be able to be housed under the animal holding policy (IACUC Policy 5). This request must be approved by ORP and ARP and coordinated with the Department of the departing PI.
Note: At the College of Medicine, please contact IACUC@pennstatehealth.psu.edu. At all other locations, please contact orp-iacuc@psu.edu.
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Protocols
Any open and active IBC protocols must be closed or transferred to another PI prior to departure. Destruction of all biological materials must be coordinated with Biosafety Officers/EHS in conjunction with laboratory close-out procedures. Biological materials may be transferred to another PI at PSU provided the IBC is notified and a protocol amendment is submitted by the new PI to include the materials on their approved IBC protocol.
Some circumstances may allow for the transfer of an approved protocol to another PI. Contact ORP Safety team to discuss a protocol transfer and, if appropriate, initiate the transfer process.
Note: At the College of Medicine, please contact BiosafetyAdmin@pennstatehealth.psu.edu. All other locations, please contact orp-biosafety@psu.edu.
University Isotopes Committee (UIC) Authorizations
Any open and active UIC authorization must be closed or transferred to another PI prior to departure. Disposal of all radioactive materials must be coordinated with Radiation Safety Officers/EHS in conjunction with laboratory close-out procedures defined by the Radiation Protection Office.
Some circumstances may allow for the transfer of an approved authorization to another PI. Contact ORP Safety team to discuss an authorization transfer and, if appropriate, initiate the transfer process.
Note: At the College of Medicine, please contact Brian Lorah. At all other locations, please contact orp-isotopes@psu.edu.
