The American Academy of Underwater Sciences is celebrating National Scientific Diving Month this November in recognition of the those whose research takes place underwater.  At Penn State, ocean-related research exceeds over $73 million annually according to the Center for Marine Science and Technology (CMAST). Despite our geographical location, Penn State supports a range of educational and research activities in the study of the ocean and its life, chemistry, physics, geology, and interaction with other parts of the Earth.

At Penn State, all scientific diving is reviewed and approved by the Diving Control Board, which ensures that divers are trained and qualified and that dive plans meet certain requirements. There are many opportunities available to students interested in scientific diving, including courses, a Marine Science minor, and scholarships.

Becoming a Certified Scientific Diver requires special training and participation is by application only. Those interested in learning more can visit Penn State’s Scientific Diving website.
